The curriculum is the entire range of activities and learning that takes place in our school for the benefit of the pupils. We plan lessons that are individually or group matched to each child’s ability, taking account of their personal needs and ensuring that the best possible progress is made. The school's curriculum is fashioned around concepts, content, and activities that matter to children at key developmental stages in their lives. Preschool children (18monthsto 5/6 years) interact with practical life, sensory, literacy, numeracy, and cultural materials and experiences. This experience is hands-on and concrete as they seek to emulate the world and relate it to their lives using Montessori Learning Materials, which are physical/tactile learning tools that help children understand an important range of key concepts in a concrete way. The materials act as a springboard to extend children's skills, knowledge, and cultural appreciation in many, many ways.
Primary children are encouraged to move from imitation to feeling and experiencing their world more directly. They learn through a subject-based topic curriculum (Nigerian and British) which covers as many areas of the curriculum as appropriate. Core subjects are English, Mathematics, Science, I.CT and civic education. The other subjects are cultural and creative Art, Social studies, French, Physical and health Education, music, home economics, and Yoruba language. The children will benefit from a curriculum that cherishes independence, self-motivation, and passion.
Acedoor School is deeply committed to guaranteeing that the health and well-being of all its pupils is at the heart of our philosophy and curriculum. As parents, you will naturally know that children are much better equipped to learn well when they lead healthy lifestyles. Therefore, pupils at Acedoor school have access to a range of curricular and extracurricular experiences, which will help them to make well-informed and appropriate choices relating to ‘Healthy Eating’ and ‘Healthy Living’. With this in mind, below are just a few of the initiatives that are currently proving to be successful
Pupils are encouraged to bring healthy snacks into school at morning break, consisting primarily of fruits, vegetables, and a cup of milk. This is reinforced by the school's ‘Healthy Choices’ awards, which are celebrated during assemblies. Pupils are encouraged to keep hydrated throughout the day by bringing a named bottle of water.
The Curriculum has enabled pupils to develop skills in successfully developing positive and fulfilling relationships with others and has also promoted the idea that ‘Healthy Minds’ are equally important as ‘Healthy Bodies.
We offer a range of Extra-Curricular Activities at different times of the day, e.g., Taekwondo, swimming, Soccer Ballet/African dance, keyboard, Crocheting, beading, Stitches and board games. We also offer after-school care and coaching.
The school has its own entrance, an enclosed, safe outside playground, and a large open grass play area. There is a well-resourced, wide range of play equipment. The children enjoy exploring and investigating in the large sand pit, playing on the climbing frame and slide, and getting messy in our digging area, amongst many other things. We have a qualified teachers and Learning Support Assistants.
Our staff is a strong and committed team with a wide range of expertise. Each class has a minimum of a full time teacher and full time support staff which provides an adult ratio that ensures all children can be supported effectively. We have a selection of brand new fiction and non-fiction books. There is also a small fiction area used for small group work in the classrooms We are well equipped with ICT resources which are constantly being updated.
Our behaviour policy is based on raising the self-worth of children by focusing on positive, rather than, negative response. Every child needs praise, success, recognition and affection. However, the children are still expected to conform to certain standards of behaviour in order to keep themselves and others safe. They are expected to show respect for the rights of others. In order to encourage a Positive self-image, we reward good behaviour in a variety of ways.
The school is a mixed-gender school from crèche to Primary and the catchment area provides a mix of backgrounds each class will be known by a stage in the process of germination. The year group structure is as follows;
